“I tell people that they need to soak the cannabis in distilled water for at least 24 to 48 hours just to take out the impurities and to remove the chlorophyll,” Jeff says. “And I teach people how to blanch it to take out even more of the taste and more of the impurities, so you’re working with a really fine product that you’re going to infuse into your butter or oil.”
Frankly either making the butter the way I described it, or making it the boiling water method is easiest. Making tinctures and oils is a pain, and taste like complete crap. Don’t put raw pot in food as it won’t carboxylate, which is the heating process to make the thc become available to your body. That’s why making butter or oils is the best way to ingest it. You can use it just like you would butter, you can make candy from it, or brownies, or whatever, but why go to all that trouble to have pot tasting candy and food? I don’t find it unpleasant by itself, but I would in my eggs, or pizza, or whatever. I too have COPD issues (61), so I eat butter instead of smoking. The difficult part about making butter is depending on where you are, weed can be really expensive. If you make it the way I described above, just make sure it isn’t getting too hot. If it starts foaming too much, take it off the heat for a bit, turn the heat down a little, and put it back on. You want somewhere between medium to medium low heat depending on your stove. I don’t think this is the answer you’re looking for, but this is what I know. If you want the boiling water method I’ll post it for you. It’s more time consuming, but probably safer since you have no prior experience making butter directly on heat. I used to be a chef, so it’s like making Hollandaise sauce without a double broiler. I’m just used to doing it this way. And one more word of caution, it makes your house stink, really, really stink. So keep the windows closed and don’t have the grandkids over for a day or two 😉
please help me with this confusion. Ideally, decarboxylation takes place at a temperature just over 200 for about just under an hour. This is accomplished in boiling water, which reaches and maintains about 212 degrees. So if I boil the herb at that temp for an hour, isn’t that decarboxylating it? Why do it in the oven first and then do it again in the saucepan? What am I missing?
Enjoy ur site. I like the mason jar technique. I bought a cold brew coffee filter that inserts into the larger mason jar. Put ur weed into the inside of the strainer filter. Holds a oz or more. Put whatever oil or butter into mason jar with water. For the lid of mason jar I took a skinny nail and made 2 very small holes into the top. Now no need to burp the jar. The build up has a place to escape. Next I put the mason jar into my pot fill it with water enough to come up past my material level …then put my sous vide into the pot. I set my temp at 190 and set my timer for 3 to 6 hours. Does pretty damn good. I do restrain what’s in the filter and run hot water over it. The crock is also a preferred choice. I own a magical butter, a levo…save ur money folks they are glorified crock pots with a hefty price tag.!! Save ur $$ and get yourself some flower or other herb source. The ardent is good, just a little on the small side and the tcheck is also good to have. It takes the guess work out. Also if possible I would like to see a good easy way to infuse chocolate, milk and white and a easy potent hard candy. You do a great job on bringing Info, good solid info to the masses. Today here in Philly I saw on the news they are finally going to put recreational on the table for discussion we do have medical. How would you recommend carboxylating/activating the cannabinoid that can’t be metabolized without such processes? I read somewhere that the temperature required for that is around 240 F, but I’m unsure about whether or not this would be critical for cooking. I normally make brownies and I suspect that baked goods probably don’t get anywhere near that temperature in the center. I like the idea of having water in with the oil, but I don’t want to limit the efficacy of my oil. Do you think that I could heat the oil to 240 F after I strain It?
Cooking with premade concentrates is also an art that takes a little practice to get right. Cooking with kief is fun and easy. Its fine texture dissolves almost instantly in liquids and fats, sometimes even at room temperature. Hash, however, will take a little preparation, and this also depends on its consistency. Dry hash can be put in a food processor to grind it. The sticky variety needs to be heated until it melts.
I’ve used distillate for cooking and had amazing results. Seeing as how the distillate is already decarbed, I used a double boiler. I used 2 cups of unrefined coconut oil. I dissolved the oil in the double boiler then added the distillate. Simply let it melt in to the oil for about 10 minutes on a low temp. Some of the strongest edibles I have ever made.
Start off by pureeing the raspberries along with 1/8 a cup of the water and the lemon juice. About halfway through the puree, add in 1/8 cup of the cannabis honey. Blend everything together until it is smooth. Pour the raspberry mixture through the sieve in to a clean bowl. You can discard the seeds (or eat them… I chose to eat them). Fill each of the popsicle molds about 1/3 of the way full with the raspberry mix. Freeze them for an hour.

The predominant compounds found in cannabis are THCA and CBDA. THCA is the major cannabinoid in Cannabis, while CBDA predominates in fiber-type hemps. THCA and CBDA accumulate in the secretory cavity of the glandular trichomes, which largely occur in female flowers and in most aerial parts of the plants. The concentration of these compounds depends on the variety of cannabis and its growth, harvesting and storage conditions. When locked in their acidic forms, THCA and CBDA are not bioavailable to the body’s cannabinoid receptors. Occurring either naturally within the plant, or upon “decarboxylation” (heating the plant material), these acids are non-enzymatically decarboxylated into their corresponding neutral forms (THC and CBD).
Why is this important? “This is actually a medicine that is potent,” Jeff emphasizes. “If you don’t understand how potent your butter or oil is, if you have too much THC, you’ll end up being paranoid, having anxiety, feeling nauseous, maybe throwing up. You’ll have a really bad time with it. You’ll wake up the next day with a hangover; you won’t be able to function too well.”
The first step in any weed bake is to choose a high-quality strain of weed, then make it super-strong by decarboxylating it, which is a fancy word that means to bake it on a baking sheet at 240 degrees for 25 mins to an hour, depending on how much weed you’re using for making edibles. Instead of a sauce pan should I use a pyrex measuring cup above a small pot of boiling water ( a makeshift double boiler) so the oil never gets above boiling temp 212 , so there wont be any chance of destroying potency?

Take 2 muffin tins and place the paper liners in each open holder, this is what you’ll be using to form the cups.
